Alternating Waves: Imagine the Archive [Đổi Sóng: Một Mường Tượng Về Lưu Trữ] at The Outpost Hanoi, Vietnam
Co-ordinated by the Nhà Sàn Collective, a parallel series of events – Alternating waves: Imagine the Archive [Đổi Sóng: Một Mường Tượng Về Lưu Trữ] – was presented at The Outpost art organisation in Hanoi, and four events were held across both The Outpost and Á Space in the days between November 24 and December 17 2023, in Vietnamese and English. Nhà Sàn gathered together artists, curators and architects to explore new directions for artistic documentation and experimentation in moving image works, performance art and architecture, and how they relate to archives.
The programme included: an introduction reflecting on video and sound works within the Well Settled project with artist/curator Nguyễn Quốc Thành, an evening of performance art from curator Vũ Đức Toàn, with other participating artists, a discussion with Toàn centred on the body, the physicality of performance/archives, and finally, a talk with architect Mai Hưng Trung about how spaces can themselves hold individual and collective memories and therefore reimagine the ‘archive’. Attendees also got a chance to listen to the Amplifying Archives commission, which were on display in the cafe.
